Bournemouth Writing Festival Partners with RNLI for Children’s Creative Writing Competition

The Bournemouth Writing Festival is thrilled to announce an adventurous writing competition for children with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to inspire creativity among school-aged children across Dorset.

This collaboration inspires young writers to let their imaginations soar by giving a theme of lifesaving and water safety to produce captivating stories and poems.

Open to all children aged 5 to 14, whether they attend school or are home-educated, this competition aims to instil the key facets of water safety while being creative in any form – whether a poem, story, comic strip or illustration.

Together with free teacher resources, the competition features an exclusive video from an RNLI lifeguard and the RNLI characters to inspire and guide budding writers.

Prizes

Winners of the competition will be treated to an exclusive tour of the RNLI Support Centre in Poole, along with other exciting Storm Force prizes. The celebrations will culminate in a special awards ceremony at the Bournemouth Writing Festival, taking place on 25-27 April 2025.

Resources for Teachers and Educators

To support teachers and educators, the Bournemouth Writing Festival has developed free downloadable resources, including PowerPoint slides, an information sheet and videos and games to guide children with their writing. These materials are available now on the festival’s website.

Submission Details

The competition is now open, and entries must be submitted by Friday, 14th March 2025. A panel from the Hengistbury Head Writer’s Group will judge the submissions. Poems can be up to 30 lines and short stories up to 500 words. Illustrations are welcome and they can be in any format – a comic strip, handwritten or typed.

Dominic Wong, Festival Director, said, “We are delighted to partner with the RNLI on our third writing competition for Dorset-based schools and home-educated children. The Festival inspires all writers to write, regardless of their background, ability or age and I look forward to welcoming the winners to our celebration event during the Festival in April.”

Rory Stamp, Strategic Content Manager at the RNLI said, “This competition is a wonderful way for children to explore their creative potential while learning about the vital work of the RNLI and to learn to be safe in the water, particularly in our home of Dorset. We look forward to reading the entries!”
